U19 Super League PLAYOFFS!
PLAYOFF FRIDAY IN THE DEEP SOUTH: U19 HIGH SCHOOL SUPER LEAGUE CROWNS ITS CHAMPION THIS WEEK
Five game weeks of fives football in Cape Town's Deep South have brought us here — playoff day. This Friday, September 18, Diski Clubs - Court 1 hosts three do-or-die matches that will decide the final shape of the U19 High School Super League log, with the champion, the bronze medalist, and the wooden-spoon avoider all being crowned on the same afternoon. Under the league's playoff format, 1st faces 2nd, 3rd faces 4th, and 5th faces 6th — a system that hands the underdogs in each tie a once-off shot at glory, while the higher seeds have everything to lose. Buckle up.
2:00 PM — 3rd Place Playoff: Masi High School vs Fish Hoek Students (Diski Clubs - Court 1)
First up is a battle for bronze. Masi High School, guided by coach Siphelele Meleni and built on the same togetherness-first philosophy as their Masi Academy counterparts, finish the regular season 3rd on 6 points after a mixed run of results, including a narrow 7-5 win over Fish Hoek back in Week 4. That head-to-head form gives Masi High a psychological edge, but Fish Hoek Students will fancy their chances of revenge. The fully student-run outfit, coordinated by volunteer coaches from Diski Fives and fielding the youngest squad in the league, come into this tie in red-hot form — they managed a 2-1 win over Simons Town in their final round match to lock down 4th spot. As the lower seed, Fish Hoek have nothing to lose and everything to gain; expect their trademark scrappy, self-directed energy to make life uncomfortable for Masi High.
2:45 PM — 5th Place Playoff: Simons Town High vs Silvermine Academy (Diski Clubs - Court 1)
Next, two sides who know each other well close out the regular season with a 2-2 draw just two weeks ago, and now meet again with real stakes on the line. Simons Town High, marshalled by team manager Richwen and built on tight, disciplined, hard-to-break-down defending, finish 5th and will be determined to defend that spot. Standing in their way is Silvermine Academy, the close-knit, relationship-first side steered by team manager Ingrid Caris, whose physical support play has been a hallmark of their season even through a tough run of results, including a heavy 13-3 loss to Zeekoevlei last time out. As the 6th seed, Silvermine get their one shot to leapfrog Simons Town and climb the final log — with the sides having split the points on their last meeting, this one could well go down to the wire.
3:30 PM — Champions Playoff: Masi Academy vs Zeekoevlei High (Diski Clubs - Court 1)
The headline act. Masi Academy top the log on 12 points, driven all season by the leadership of captains Linathi Landingwe and Busisa Fani under coach Inga Ngcupe, and a squad built on unity and respect that has translated into ruthless results — including a 17-0 demolition of Silvermine and a 10-1 win over Fish Hoek. But they'll face their toughest test yet in Zeekoevlei High, level on 12 points and arriving with serious pedigree as the reigning U19 Freedom Cup champions and SSS national runners-up in Gqeberha. Head coach Jordan Gysman's side have been irresistible in the run-in, thrashing Silvermine 13-3 and Fish Hoek 5-0 to force their way into a straight shootout for the title. With quick, direct, disciplined football against a Masi Academy side that simply doesn't lose, this Champions Playoff has every ingredient of a classic — and only one team walks away as U19 Super League champions.
Three winner-takes-all matches, one court, one afternoon. Kick-off is 2:00 PM at Diski Clubs - Court 1 this Friday, September 18 — get there early, because the Deep South's U19 High School Super League title race comes down to this.
